Have you enjoyed the summer activities of the Marcus Historical Society? I have been out of town but I heard the Root Beer floats were good at the Family Fun night and the Guest Day event was awesome. The next big event is the Marcus Fair. Plan to attend and be sure to stop by our Historical Society booth. Dr. Joynt’s old car has arrived and will be on display. Maybe this is the car he drove to attend your birth or made a house call when you were sick.
We plan to have CD’s of the program presented at the Guest Day on sale in our booth. The cost is $10.00 and will include a written explanation of the pictures on the CD. If you wish to have a CD mailed to you the charge will be $10.00 plus postage.
A quilt made and donated by Bonnie Means will be displayed and chances may be purchased. You have seen Bonnie’s work at other fairs and know what a beautiful job she does on her quilts.
Are you a member of the Marcus Historical Society? If so your yearly dues are to be paid at this time. The easiest way to do this is at our fair booth. If you are an out of town member or unable to attend the fair please send your dues to the Marcus Historical Society. Box 321, Marcus, IA 51035 Individual membership is $10.00 per year and a family membership is $15.00 per year. Any amount paid over the membership fee will be noted as a donation. Our membership list is rewritten every Fall so please pay your dues at fair time. New members are always welcome and past members will be welcomed back.
Did you see the window display from the Historical Society on Main street in honor of our service members. We hope to have a new display by fair time. Be sure to check it out.
The summer news letter will be sent to all members in the near future. It is time again to elect board members so be sure to fill out the ballot in the news letter and send it back or drop it off at the fair booth. News letters may also be obtained at the fair booth.
We are still looking for family histories or anything you wish to donate that tells of any part of your family history. If you have questions or a history item to donate contact Arlene at aeh1026@gmail.com or talk to someone at the fair booth.
A settee and chair that are over 100 years old has been donated and are on display at the Reed center. If you have small tables, lamps, etc from this era that would enhance this setting and would like to donate or loan them to the Historical Society please contact one of the people listed below
The next meeting of the Marcus Historical Society will be July 27, 2010 at 7 PM in the Library. Hope to see you there.
