Marcus Historical Society

Meeting was held with 10 members and one guest attending. Our guest, Vangie Cowan, Director of Marcus for Progress/Main Street was present to further discuss the project of "Historic Preservation Ethic" (a program of the IA State Main Street Organization). She explains that she is hoping to get ALL Marcus residents interested & involved in documenting their homes history--such as the date it was built? who built it? who were the first owners, etc.? There are forms to fill out with this type of information and will then be compiled into books? or file cabinets? and preserved as historic documents in our History Bldg. This survey will also include finding historic information about all the business buildings in Marcus. Vangie is asking that our Society be a "partner" with MFP/MS in reaching this goal. This will be discussed further during our business meeting tonight.

Faith Specht reports she received a Thank You note from Robert Bode of Dublin, OH with a check for $25 donation. This was in response to the Marcus Centennial Book and other history items that were sent to Mr. Bode's mother last month.(Mary Given Bode) Committee Reports: Sherree reported that a Newsletter has been completed by Arlend Hollenbeck, including pictures and reports of several events that have occured in recent months. All are in agreement that the Historic Documentation Project is a good appropriate project for our organization to be involved in, but we definitely want to be considered a "partner" in this project and not to take sole responsibility for this. It could become a very time consuming and detailed effort to accomplish this project. Another discussion re: the return of Dr. Joynt's care to Marcus. Suggestion from Jerry Meylor that we offer to provide some financial assistance in the transporting o fthe car back to Marcus. Another suggestion-take a picture of the car and have some magnets made to sell or give away at the fair booth. Another suggestion-to have a plaque made to display with the car recognizing Vernon Ebert for giving the car to the Society.

Bonnie Husman brings up the possibility of providing a Cemetery Directory sign for the entrance to the cemetary? This had been discussed briefly at a previous meeting--we know the that DAR will provide $500 towards such a project but it will likely be quite an expensive and complicated, detailed effort to achieve by our organization. Bonnie has contacted the cemetery Association Board members and they too are willing and interested in such a project. But, there is NO money available from their Association! This will be discussed further at a later date.
