Marcus Historical Society Meeting

November 28, 2006

The Marcus Historical Society met Tuesday, November 28, 2006 in the Farmers State Bank Community Room.  Eleven members were present: Jim Nielsen, Jim Wiese, Bonnie Husman, Maxine Shea, June Dias, Jerry Meylor, Gerald Pallesen, Fran Zembsch, Mary Peterson, Edith Bilsland, and Caryn Barry.

President June Dias called the meeting to order.

The minutes of the previous meeting were published in the Marcus News and accepted as published.

Jerry Meylor, treasurer, reported that two checks had been written.  $750 was sent to the US Treasury with the application for 501(c)3 status, and $167.10 given to Caryn Barry as reimbursement for grant writing workshop expenses.  Balance remaining in checking is $1, 567.90.

June Dias reported that the IRS received the tax free status application which was sent by certified mail.  She has been told by the IRS that normal processing time is 120 days.  The local office of King Reinsch Prosser & Co. LLP handled the application process at no charge.  June requested an invoice from them documenting what they could have charged ($1,390) and this will be placed in the society's in-kind file.

Volunteers are needed for a membership/fund drive.  Bonnie Husman, Jim Nielsen, Maxine Shea, and June Dias are willing to serve.  A motion was made by Jim Nielsen, seconded by Jerry Meylor that a form letter be created and addresses collected for a drive.  Jim Nielsen will check as to how the Heartland Care Center fundraising was handled.  Ads may need to be purchased.  Another idea is to create a Marcus Historical Society website with space purchased from Midlands.

June Dias showed some possible designs for membership cards which she had created on her computer.  She has spoken to Kathy Bork, MMC art teacher, about a student-created logo for the Society.  Kathy will have a graphic design class beginning the 2nd semester and said that this would be a good project for them.

A goal date for the selection of a building was discussed.  Jim Nielsen moved, seconded by Bonnie Husman to attempt a decision by June 1, 2007.  Motion carried.

Caryn Barry spoke about the two-day grant writing workshop she attended.

After discussion it was decided that only the membership/fund drive committee will meet in December.  The next regular meeting will be held Tuesday, January 23 at the Farmers State Bank community meeting room.

Respectfully submitted,

Maxine Shea, Secretary
