Marcus
Historical Society Meeting
July 11, 2006
The Marcus Historical Society met on Tuesday, July 11 at 7:00
pm in the Main Street Marcus offices of City Hall. Present:
June Dias, Margaret Dorr, Thelma Gravenish, Jim Nielsen, Rod
Ogren, Sherree Ogren, Faith Spect, and James Wiese.
An anonymous donor has made a written purchase offer for the
Danish Lutheran Church building on West Cedar Street with the
stated intent to gift the building to the Historical Society
once this organization obtains nonprofit status. There is an
offer pending from a different party on the building at this
time, however.
Articles of Incorporation for the Historical Society have been
filed with the Iowa Secretary of State. That office has
advised that there is typically an eight-day processing time
before the Articles will be on record. At that time, the
Historical Society will be a legal entity with nonprofit
status in the State of Iowa.
The Society Bylaws were reviewed, specifically Article III on
Membership Dues. Five different levels of yearly membership
were agreed upon, plus a lifetime membership level that will
be available only during the first year of the Society's
incorporation.
There was discussion and planning for the Society's booth at
the Marcus Fair; set up and tear down, items for display,
volunteer work schedule, and membership sign-up forms.
Faith Specht has agreed to act as Interim Treasurer until the
Executive Board officers are elected.
It was decided that there is no need for the expense of a Post
Office box at this time.
The next meeting of the Marcus Historical Society will be on
Thursday, August 3 at 7:00 pm in the Main Street Marcus
offices of City Hall. The meeting will be open to the
public. All potential Historical Society members are invited
to attend.
Respectfully Submitted,
June Dias, Chair
